Adolescent Psychiatry Sydney: Supporting Teen Mental Health in the Hills District

The teenage years are one of the most significant — and sometimes most difficult — periods of a person's life. For some adolescents, the pressures of school, friendships, family, and identity become overwhelming in ways that go beyond typical teenage stress. If your teenager is struggling with their mental health, early specialist support can make a real difference. At Dolphin Tribe in Baulkham Hills, our adolescent psychiatrists work with adolescents and their families across Sydney's Hills District to provide thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis, and compassionate, evidence-based care.

For younger children requiring specialist psychiatric support, visit our child psychiatry page.

What is Adolescent Psychiatry?

Adolescent psychiatry is a specialist branch of medicine focused on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions in young people. Unlike general practitioners or even paediatricians, adolescent psychiatrists have advanced training specifically in the mental, emotional, and developmental health of teenagers and young adults.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, which means they can not only provide psychological assessment and therapy, but also prescribe and manage medication where clinically appropriate. Many adolescents benefit from a combination of psychiatric assessment and ongoing psychological therapy, and our team is set up to provide both under one roof.

Conditions We Support in Adolescents

Our adolescent psychiatrists assess and treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

  • Depression — persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, or withdrawal from family and friends

  • Anxiety disorders — including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and school refusal

  • ADHD — where symptoms are complex, co-occurring, or requiring medication assessment and management

  • Trauma and PTSD — following adverse or traumatic experiences

  • Eating disorders — including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder)

  • Bipolar disorder and mood dysregulation

  • Psychosis and early psychosis — including first-episode psychosis

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) — where a psychiatric co-assessment is needed alongside the ASD diagnosis

  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation — where specialist risk assessment and safety planning is required

Many adolescents present with more than one condition — for example, depression and anxiety, or ADHD and trauma. Our clinicians are trained to see the full picture, not just the most visible presenting problem.

What to Expect from an Adolescent Psychiatry Assessment

An initial psychiatric assessment at Dolphin Tribe is a thorough, unhurried conversation — not a checklist. Our psychiatrists take time to understand your teenager as a whole person: their history, their relationships, their strengths, and what's been getting in the way. We involve parents and carers where appropriate, and always with the young person's knowledge and agreement.

The assessment typically covers:

  • Presenting concerns and how long they've been occurring

  • Developmental and medical history

  • Family history of mental health conditions

  • School, social, and family functioning

  • Sleep, appetite, energy, and physical health

  • Risk assessment, including self-harm and safety

At the end of the assessment, you'll receive a clear explanation of our findings, a provisional or confirmed diagnosis where appropriate, and a recommended treatment plan — explained in plain language, with time for questions.

Treatment Approaches for Adolescent Mental Health

Treatment at Dolphin Tribe is tailored to the individual young person and may include:

  • Individual therapy — including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, and trauma-informed approaches

  • Parent and family guidance — supporting the people around your teenager to respond in ways that help, not hinder, recovery

  • School liaison — working with schools to put appropriate support and adjustments in place

  • Medication management — where clinically indicated, prescribed and monitored carefully by our psychiatrists

  • Coordination with other services — including GPs, paediatricians, school counsellors, and hospital teams where needed

We don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. Your teenager's plan is built around their specific needs, goals, and circumstances — and it evolves as they do.

Why Families in the Hills District Choose Dolphin Tribe

Dolphin Tribe is a specialist mental health and neurodevelopmental clinic — not a GP practice with a mental health component. Every clinician on our team has specialist training in child and adolescent mental health, which means your teenager is seen by someone who truly understands the landscape of adolescent development and the conditions that affect young people.

We're based in Baulkham Hills and see families from across the Hills District, including Castle Hill, Kellyville, Norwest, Rouse Hill, and beyond. Our clinic offers both psychiatry and psychology, making it straightforward to access the right level and combination of care without needing to manage multiple referrals across different practices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adolescent Psychiatry

Does my teenager need a GP referral to see an adolescent psychiatrist?

Yes — a GP referral is required to see one of our adolescent psychiatrists. Your GP can also complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan at the same visit, which gives your teenager access to Medicare rebates for psychological therapy. If you're unsure where to start, contact our reception team and we can guide you through the referral process.

How do I know if my teenager needs a psychiatrist rather than a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication where needed and some psychiatrists can also provide psychological therapy such as our psychiatrist Dr Sangeetha Makielan. A psychologist provides psychological assessment and therapy. Many adolescents benefit from both. If your teenager's difficulties are complex, severe, or may require medication, a psychiatrist is the right starting point. Our team can help you figure out the best entry point for your teenager's situation.

Do you prescribe medication to teenagers?

Our adolescent psychiatrists can prescribe medication where it is clinically indicated, following a thorough assessment. Medication is always considered carefully, discussed openly with both the young person and their family, and monitored closely. It is never the first or only option — and no decision about medication is made without a proper assessment and a shared conversation.
