Make an Appointment with our Psychiatrist

We’re here to help children, adolescents and new mums who are struggling with their mental health.

Dr Makielan generally only sees new patients under the age of 25 years and perinatal patients, she is happy to continue to provide care for existing patients into adulthood. This includes those patients who have been under the care of a Paediatrician until the age of 17.

Here’s how to make an appointment with Dr. Makielan.

Step One: Referrals

Before you come and meet with us, you’ll need a referral from your GP or a specialist (such as an Obstetrician).

  • Referrals can be made to Dr. Makielan, can be open to any psychiatrist (or can be for another named psychiatrist if you already have one).

  • Referrals from GPs lasts 12 months and referrals from specialists and consultant physicians are valid for three months.

  • You will need to get a referral before booking an appointment.

Step Two: Request an Appointment

Please complete the Appointment request form and include the referral.

Alternatively email us with following details:

  • Full name of patient

  • DOB

  • Address

  • Email

  • Contact phone number

  • Presenting issues/problems

  • Referral (must be attached).

  • Contact name of Parent/Carer (if patient under 18)

Step Three: Referral Acceptance and Contact to Book

We may ask for more information before we can accept the referral. We will then contact you to book an appointment.

Please note our staff and practitioners work part-time only. Therefore while we will contact you as soon as we can, it can take up to 1 week for us to respond.

Due to our commitment to provide best possible care to our patients, we cannot always accept all referrals. Please note while we do not provide a reason for not accepting a referral, usually it is based on current patients and our practitioners' capacity to take on new referrals.

Step Four: Initial Appointment

The first appointment will take around an hour. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early and bring the following:

  • Medicare card with patient’s name.

  • Referral letter.

  • Any reports or letters from other professionals such as psychologists, paediatricians, gynaecologists (for perinatal), psychotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and school counsellors.

  • Recent and old school reports (for children and adolescents).

  • Completed the online New Patient Details Form or printed form

At Dolphin Tribe a comprehensive psychiatric assessment usually requires 2-3 appointments.

Bringing support

For children: We encourage both parents to come along to the appointment with a referred child or adolescent, even if they do not both live with the child. If this is not possible, at least one parent or carer needs to attend.

For individuals: You are welcome to invite someone else along, such as a member of your extended family, a friend or teacher, if you think that would be helpful.

For perinatal and adults: partners are encouraged to attend.

Please find our cancellation policy here.
