Appointment with our Psychiatrist
Before Making the First Appointment - Referrals
You will need a referral from your GP or a specialist (Paediatrician, etc) to see Dr. Makielan. Please note the referral can be made to Dr Makielan or it could be an open referral to any Psychiatrist or indeed another named Psychiatrist. A referral from a general practitioner (GP) to a specialist lasts 12 months. Referrals from specialists and consultant physicians are valid for 3 months.
We request that you get the referral before you making an appointment. You are required to send the referral within 48-hours of making an appointment. We may cancel appointments if the referrals are not sent within this time frame.

Referral from GP or Specialist (scan or photo as attachment). You GP or practitioner can send the referral directly to us electronically (preferred) on Healthlink (dolphint) please see here.
We may ask additional basic questions over the phone or email before we are able to confirm an appointment. We may also ask you to fill additional questionnaires or provide additional documents that may need to be reviewed before an appointment can be confirmed.
We will contact you as soon as we can (usually within 24-48 hours) with a confirmation. Please note appointment can only be confirmed once the referral and any supporting documentation (if applicable) is received and reviewed.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the appointment.
Please bring the following:
Medicare card with patients name.
Referral letter from GP/Specialist (Referrers please see here) if a referral is not sent via secure messaging already. Please note it is advisable to referral includes all family members if relevant.
Any reports or letters from other professionals, such as psychologists, paediatricians, gynaecologists (for perinatal), psychotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and school counsellors.
Recent and old school reports of the referred person
How long would the first appointment take?
The first appointment will usually take about an hour. Subsequent appointments may be shorter. A complete psychiatric assessment for children and adolescents may take more than one appointment.
Who should attend?
It is preferable to have both parents and referred child/adolescent to attend. Even if both parents do not live with the child/adolescent they are encouraged to attend the appointment. At least one parent/carer is expected to attend with the child or adolescent.
You are welcome to invite someone else along such as a member of your extended family, a friend or teacher if you think that would be helpful.
For perinatal appointments partners are encouraged to attend.
