On completion of her foundation years, Dr Makielan commenced her specialist medical training at the Maudsley (oldest psychiatry institution in the world) in London, United Kingdom.  Dr Makielan worked at Maudsley Hospital, Guy’s Hospital and Bethlem Hospital in London before moving to Gold Coast. In Gold Coast, she worked at Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital.

Dr Sangeetha Makielan worked as a Child & Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist (staff-specialist) at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, where she was responsible for in-patient ward and training next generation of Psychiatrists and doctors. Dr Makielan now works in private practice. Dr Makielan has a wealth of experience working with complex presentations in acute settings. She has been working with children, adolescents and adults across the lifespan. She has worked with women and their families from pre-conception to pregnancy and the postnatal period,  completing a mental health assessment and individually tailored treatment options for them. Transition to parenthood can be a time when traumatic memories could be retriggered, making the job of parenting more challenging. She has supported parents with Parent-Infant Psychotherapy to promote an infant’s sense of security and parental bonding.

Dr Makielan is passionate about working collaboratively with patients and offering a holistic approach to treatment to achieve optimal outcomes for infants, children and their families. Treatment is built on mutual respect, responsibility, and commitment. Dr Makielan believes that she can best support the treatment of young children by ensuring the family has an understanding of comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic assessment which would include biopsychosocial formulation. A comprehensive psychiatric assessment would always be aimed to address options for support and treatment that extend beyond just prescribing medications.

Dr Makielan believes she can best support children and their families with early intervention coupled with optimally integrated psychotherapy and medication. Individual and family preferences and beliefs are always taken into consideration when making decisions about prescribing.

Having lived and worked in different countries, Dr Makielan embraces cultural diversity and is experienced in working with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds including those from remote indigenous communities. She can speak Tamil language fluently. She is also conversant in Hindi.

Her special interests include psychotherapy (individual, parent-child), Giftedness and twice-exceptionality, family therapy, perinatal and infant psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry.
